A quick update

Hiya!

firstly, I would like to thank everyone of you who have humbled me to graciousness with your well wishes. Thank you, and I pledge to not let you down. Wouldn't it be something if we could all pull ourselves up together? I have joined the Facebook group, 2012 Spring Clean Reboot, and hope to become active over there with you as well.

I am seeking recommendations regarding online log books to begin recording my runs on. I have used Buckeye Outdoors happily in the past, but I must admit I am out of the loop of cutting edge web-bery, so if you love your log, let me know why? Thanks.

I ran a nice 5 miler with Riley T. Dog this morning. He's happy to have his personal training job back! While out there, I listened to the latest episode of The Runner's Roundtable www.runnersroundtable.com  Dr. Dave and his band of doctoral gypsies spoke about stain drugs that fight cholesterol, and of how studies with rats have suggested that statins drastically increase muscle fatigue and inflammation. As it turns out, I have been on a statin since 2009, when I got my arterial stent. This study fascinates me, and I want to research this finding more before I confront my cardiologist. What do you know about statins? If you think you can help me, kindly forward your knowledge here in the comments. Could it be that I have been sabotaging my health, as well as my running, with a pill that is supposed to be helping me? I am particularly concerned about anything that I may ingest that could lead to chronic inflammation. That's the big, silent killer out there, in my opinion.

See ya!

  1. John,
I'm on Crestor (10MG) and have been on some sort of Cholesterol lowering drugs for many years; at least 20. I didn't start running until 2008 so I can't compare before or after. I can say I've never been fast and I do get sore so I'm also interested in this. I will also say that my levels have gone from a record high (PB) of 311 when my Dr. called to see if I had had a stroke yet. I now consistently run below 200 and have once pulled out a 160. My last reading was 180. So, there are also risks of not lowering the readings. So, keep me posted on your findings and best wishes on your reentry!! :)

    1. Thanks John.

Wow! Great job getting those numbers down! I got blood work done yesterday, so the results should be in soon. I was in the 160's six months ago, but I suspect it will worsen with this test. muscle pain is something I can handle, but the inflammation issues worry me. I will let you know the results when I get them.

  2. John, I too am on a statin. For years I was on the statin Zoccor, or "Simvastatin", and didn't think twice about it. In March of this year I was switched to Lipitor which in the medical field is the "daddy of all statins". It was sold as a non generic drug until this tear which meant; A) it was expensive, B) it worked the best. After taking it my numbers were reduced dramatically, but I noticed that muscle recovery was twofold as long after a run, as before, I never really put the 2 together until recently when I heard the RR as you mentioned, Statins are notorious for causing muscle aches and pains, but these usually level off. I've been on a self imposed running Hiatus since March, and expect to return in early summer as a way to nurse some minor aches and injuries. I am curious as well as to how my body will react and will keep you posted. It is a valid and fascinating subject. BTW, stress )in the healthcare fields) has been my best friend for a while, so I can identify).Good wishes for both of us as we struggle to take care of "ourselves" in these challenging times

    1. Thanks, Norm.

... Yeah, let's both get ft, eh? I have had more soreness, especially in the morning, but I chaulked it up to being 46 and beat up a bit.

I look forward to chatting with my cardiologist soon.

  3. hi John - I have no advice to offer you on statins but it sounds like something you really need to look into.

Re an exercise log - I have bounced around between Buckeye and Dailymile (too social for me - I don't need ANOTHER social network) and am now using Training Peaks. It's not particularly great looking but has a surprising amount of features which you may or may not use. Honesty compels me to tell you that my coach uses it to put in my workouts so that's the main reason I use it - my Garmin synchs to it automatically and matches the actual workout to the intended one. Clever eh?
